Acting is the work of an actor or actress, which is a person in theatre, television, film, or any other storytelling medium who tells the story by portraying a character and, usually, speaking or singing the written text or play.

Master Thespian was a recurring character on American sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, appearing 13 times between 1985 and 1989. Played by Jon Lovitz, Master Thespian was a ruthlessly ambitious, egomaniacal actor who spoke with a plummy "Shakespearean" English accent and often elicited the sympathy of other characters in the sketch, only to reveal the ruse by declaring his catchphrase, "Acting!" His arch-rival and mentor, Baudelaire (John Lithgow), often had the last laugh in the escalating one-upmanship, in reality childish pranks and paperthin disguises that they both fell for, ostensibly due to their brilliant acting. On the few occasions we actually see him act, it is clear that he is not as good as his reputation would have us believe, on occasion seeming completely oblivious to the concept of acting.

Der Begriff Schauspiel im Theater wird entweder für ein überwiegend gesprochenes Drama verwendet oder für eine Sparte der Bühnenkünste, die von Schauspielern ausgeübt wird. Im klassischen Mehrspartentheater bezeichnet er die mehrheitlich gesprochenen Theateraufführungen im Unterschied zu Musiktheater und Tanztheater. In Analogie zu diesen Begriffen wird die Sparte des Schauspiels auch als Sprechtheater bezeichnet.

Se conoce como actuación al proceso de investigación personal que hace el actor para descubrir a un futuro personaje a representar. Dicho proceso comienza desde una interiorización para conocer el principio de dicho personaje y traerlo desde lo más profundo y transformarlo en un personaje integrado. La actuación es descrita como acciones hechas por una personaje dentro de la escena teatral. Aunque dichas acciones son auténticas, deberían por lo menos estar cargadas de una intención que permita que el observador se estimule y logra recibir el mensaje en su totalidad
