Achill Island
Achill Island in
County Mayo is the largest island of
Ireland, and is situated off the west coast. It has a population of 2,700. Its area is . Achill is attached to the mainland by
Michael Davitt Bridge, between the villages of Gob an Choire (
Achill Sound) and Polranny, so it is possible to drive onto the island. This is a causeway and
swing bridge which allows the passage of small boats. A bridge was first completed here in 1887, and replaced by the current structure in 1949. Other centres of population include the villages of
Keel, Dooagh, Dumha Éige (Dooega) and Dugort. The parish's
Gaelic football pitch and two secondary schools are on the mainland at Polranny. Early settlements are believed to have been established on Achill around
3000 BCE. A paddle dating from this period was found at the
crannog near Dookinella.

Irlande, et est située au large de la côte ouest. Sa population est de 2700 habitants. Achill est rattachée à la terre par le pont Michael Davitt, entre les villages d’Achill Sound et de Polranny. C’est un pont tournant qui permet le passage de petits bateaux. Le pont a été construit en 1886 et remplacé par la structure actuelle après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Repubblica d'Irlanda, ed è situata a ridottissima distanza dalle coste occidentali della propria contea. È collegata, infatti, alla terraferma da un piccolo ponte levatoio, il Michael Davitt Bridge, tra i villaggi di Achill Sound e Achill (il secondo paradossalmente è sulla terraferma e non sull'isola a dispetto del nome).Achill Island è meta in estate di folti gruppi di turisti, molti dei quali amanti del surf. Ha una popolazione di 2.700 abitanti ed un'area di 147 km².
