Achaean

The Achaeans (in Greek , Akhaioi) is one of the collective names used for the Greeks in Homer's Iliad (used 598 times) and Odyssey. The other names are the Danaans (, used 138 times in the Iliad) and Argives (, used 29 times in the Iliad). In the historical period, the Achaeans were the inhabitants of the region of Achaea, a region in the north central part of the Peloponnese. The city states of this region formed a confederation known as the Achaean League which was influential during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.

Achajowie (gr.  Achaioi) –  plemię greckie, które jako pierwsze przybyło na obszary kontynentalnej Grecji około 2000 lat p.n.e., podbijając miejscowych Pelazgów. W XVIII w. p.n.e. Achajowie podbili Kretę, którą niepodzielnie władali jednak dopiero od drugiego najazdu około 1400 roku p.n.e. Eponimicznym ojcem plemion achajskich był mityczny Achajos, syn Zeusa i Pytii, w innej wersji syn królewny ateńskiej Kreuzy i Ksutosa. Achajowie byli twórcami kultury mykeńskiej, za której centrum uznaje się bogate w złoto Mykeny, leżące w Argolidzie na Peloponezie. Od innych plemion greckich odróżniali się tym że nosili brody oraz strojem złożonym z przepaski i chitonu z krótkimi rękawami. Mieszkali w prostokątnych domach zawierającymi wspólne pomieszczenie z paleniskiem pośrodku, tzw. megaron.

Achei (in greco Αχαίοι), Argivi o Danai sono la terza popolazione ellenica che invase la Grecia nel II millennio a.C., riuscendo a egemonizzare definitivamente le genti preelleniche, da alcuni dette greche, o pelasgi.Nell'Iliade con il nome Achei vengono indicati i popoli greci che presero parte alla Guerra di Troia. In età storica sono detti Achei gli abitanti dell'Acaia Ftiotide, nella Tessaglia meridionale, e dell'Acaia Egialea, corrispondente al Peloponneso settentrionale.Per quanto riguarda la penetrazione di questo popolo nell'area greca si ritiene generalmente che queste genti di origine indoeuropea, attraverso i Balcani, occuparono il Peloponneso intorno al 1500 a.C., in coincidenza con la fine dell'era minoica. Gli Achei potrebbero quindi essere la causa ultima della capitolazione minoica.

Ahhiyawa is in de Hettitische teksten de benaming voor het Myceense Griekenland. De koning van Mycene werd als 'grootkoning van Ahhiyawa' als een gelijkwaardige partner beschouwd, een eer die verder alleen de heersers van Egypte, Babylonië, Mitanni en later Assyrië hadden.Ahhiyawa bezat waarschijnlijk een bruggenhoofd op het vasteland van Klein-Azië rond de stad Milawata of Millawanda.
