An abyssal plain is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor, usually found at depths between 3000 and 6000 metres. Lying generally between the foot of a continental rise and a mid-ocean ridge, abyssal plains cover more than 50% of the Earth’s surface. They are among the flattest, smoothest and least explored regions on Earth. Abyssal plains are key geologic elements of oceanic basins (the other elements being an elevated mid-ocean ridge and flanking abyssal hills). In addition to these elements, active oceanic basins (those that are associated with a moving plate tectonic boundary) also typically include an oceanic trench and a subduction zone.

La plaine abyssale est une plaine sous-marine profonde (en général entre 5000 et 6000 mètres). Elle s'étend au-delà du plateau continental dont la profondeur est inférieure à 200 mètres. Elle est reliée à ce dernier par le talus continental, terrain dont la pente est accentuée. A l'opposé du plateau continental la plaine abyssale est souvent bornée par une dorsale océanique.

Djuphavsslätt är platta, relativt plana, och ofta väldigt stora havsbottnar utanför kontinentalsockeln, som ligger runt 4000 meters djup. Temperaturen på detta djup brukar uppgå till 4 grader Celsius. På grund av avsaknaden av plankton har andra djur svårt att leva här. Slätterna genomkorsas av de mittoceaniska ryggarna och de omgivande sedimentlagren innehåller många olika sorters mineraler, även om man inte har funnit ett ekonomiskt sätt att utvinna mineralerna på.
