The Ausbausprache – Abstandsprache – Dachsprache framework is a tool in dialectology used by sociolinguists for analysing and categorising the distinctiveness of language varieties that are closely related and often are used by the same society. The terms, which were coined by Heinz Kloss in 1967, are designed to capture the political reality that there are two separate and largely independent sets of criteria and arguments for deeming one variety to be an independent "language" rather than a "dialect": one linguistic, based on its objective structural properties, and the other sociological, based on its social and/or political functions. This theory is intended to deal with situations in which a speech community which is unified politically (e.g., Germany) or culturally (the "German speaking" regions that span several countries, the "Arabic speaking" regions that span dozens of countries) uses multiple dialects which mutually are highly divergent, but the two language varieties are closely related genetically, e.g., different varieties of "German", different varieties of "Arabic". In such areas, there sometimes is a large fraction of the population that adopts the view that the entire community (defined politically and/or culturally) speaks a common language, although it is universally conceded within the same community that many of the members of the community literally can't hold a conversation with each other because of dialect unintelligibility. Again the "German speaking" and "Arabic speaking" worlds provide eminent examples of this belief phenomenon. The theory of abstand and ausbau is not relevant to situations where the two varieties are related only distantly (if at all), e.g., French and German, or Spanish and English. One of the applications of this theoretical framework is language standardisation (examples since ca. 1960 being Basque and Romansch).

Im mathematisch und physikalischen Sinn ist der Abstand, die Entfernung, die Distanz zweier (Mittel-) Punkte von mathematischen bzw. physikalischen Objekten, also die Länge der durch sie begrenzten gradlinigen Strecke.

Unter Ausbausprache versteht man in der Linguistik im Anschluss an Heinz Kloss eine Sprachvarietät, die so weit entwickelt ist, dass sie für anspruchsvolle kommunikative Zwecke (z. B. Sachprosa) dienen kann. Zum Ausbau der Sprache gehört ein gewisser Grad der Normierung in Bezug auf die Grammatik, Orthographie und den Wortschatz. Ausbausprachen unterscheiden sich von den Abstandsprachen darin, dass sie aufgrund des eher geringen linguistischen Abstandes zu den benachbarten Varietäten nicht unbedingt als „Sprachen“ anzusehen sind, infolge der Anwendung für Hochliteratur, Sachprosa, Wissenschaft, Verwaltung usw. aber dennoch die Positionen einer Standardsprache einnehmen, also in ihrem Gebrauch entsprechend „ausgebaut“ sind. Beispiele für Ausbausprachen sind das Jiddische, das Galicische oder das Mazedonische. Auch das Luxemburgische wird oft als Ausbausprache angesehen, obgleich als Amtssprachen Französisch und Deutsch immer noch sehr dominant sind.

Le concept de langue Ausbau (Ausbausprache, "langue par élaboration"), de langue Abstand (Abstandsprache, "langue par distance") et de langue-toit (Dachsprache) a été développé par des sociolinguistes, notamment Heinz Kloss et Joshua Fishman, pour analyser et catégoriser des langues (Sprache signifie "langue" en allemand) et des dialectes, et pour différencier des concepts. La première occurrence des deux premiers termes semble figurer dans un article d'Heinz Kloss, « Abstand-languages and Ausbau-languages » (Anthropological linguistics, 1967, 9), mais ils font désormais partie du vocabulaire courant en sociolinguistique.

Ett utbyggnadsspråk (tyska Ausbausprache) är en språkform med standardiserad grammatik och ortografi, oftast också med ett standardiserat uttal, samt med ett större ordförråd än det som är typiskt för lokala dialekter (talspråk).
