Abraham Ortelius

Abraham Ortelius (Abraham Ortels) (April 2, 1527 – June 28, 1598) was a cartographer and geographer, generally recognised as the creator of the first modern atlas. He was born in Antwerp in what is now Belgium. A member of the influential Ortelius family of Augsburg, he traveled extensively in Europe. He is specifically known to have traveled throughout the Seventeen Provinces; south and west and north and east Germany (e.g., 1560, 1575–1576); France (1559–1560); England and Ireland (1576), and Italy (1578, and perhaps twice or thrice between 1550 and 1558).

Abraham Ortelius (Ortels, Oertel, Orthellius, Wortels, * 14. April 1527 in Antwerpen; † 28. Juni 1598 in Antwerpen) war ein belgischer Geograph und Kartograf.Er studierte Griechisch, Latein und Mathematik in Antwerpen. Ortelius war zunächst Karten- und Buchhändler, bildete sich aber zum Kartografen weiter.Am 20. Mai 1570 erschien seine erste Ausgabe vom Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, der vermutlich ersten Sammlung von Landkarten in Buchform. Diese wurde zwischen 1570 und 1612 in 42 Ausgaben und in 7 Sprachen veröffentlicht: Latein, deutsch, flämisch, französisch, spanisch, englisch und italienisch. Anders als seine Berufskollegen referenzierte er klar die Quellen seiner Karten. Ein weiteres beachtliches Werk stellt seine Ortnamensammlung Thesaurus Geographicus dar.

Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) - słynny, wybitny kartograf, historyk i wydawca map. Pochodził z  Niderlandów. W 1570 w Antwerpii wydał pierwszy usystematyzowany zbior map świata Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Atlas zawierał również mapę Polski. [nazwę "atlas" dla takiego zbioru map jako użył pierwszy Gerard Mercator (Kremer). Do 1612 wydano około 45 edycji tego ówczesnego dzieła. W kolejnych wydaniach mapy w atlasie były aktualizowane i poprawiane. Wydawnictwo to ukazało się w kilku językach na świecie.

Ortelius fu con Mercatore il grande fondatore della cartografia fiamminga.Dopo avere studiato il greco, il latino e la matematica, si stabilì ad Anversa, il grande porto delle Diciassette Province, come libraio e cartografo. Viaggiò molto e pubblicò in 1564 una carta del mondo in 8 fogli che conobbe un grande successo. Il suo modo di lavorare era sensibilmente differente del suo rivale ed amico Mercatore: Ortelius redigeva le carte per mezzo dei suoi contatti professionali o amichevoli con i cartografi europei.
