Abilene, Texas

Abilene is a city in Taylor County, Texas, United States, in the central portion of the state. The population was 115,930 at the 2000 census. It is the principal city of the Abilene, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a 2006 estimated population of 158,063. It is the county seat of Taylor County. Dyess Air Force Base is located to the west of the city.

Abilene (hebräisch für Stadt in der Ebene) ist eine Stadt im US-Bundesstaat Texas. Die Stadt wurde 1881 zur Zeit des Eisenbahnbaus in der Region gegründet. Zehn Jahre danach wurde 1891 die »Hardin-Simmons-Universität« gegründet. Der Ort liegt 524 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel.Abilene ist stolz auf seine lange militärische Geschichte, die bis ins Jahr 1800 zurückreicht. Als Heimat der Dyess Air Force Base mit seiner Rockwell B-1-Bomberflotte und des Lockheed C-130-Transportflugzeuges wird diese militärische Tradition im 21. Jahrhundert fortgesetzt.
