Abel Tasman

Abel Janszoon Tasman (1603 - October 10 1659), was a Dutch seafarer, explorer, and merchant. He is best known for his voyages of 1642 and 1644 in the service of the VOC (United East India Company). His was the first known European expedition to reach the islands of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and New Zealand and to sight the Fiji islands, which he did in 1643. Tasman, his navigator Visscher, and his Merchant Gilsemans also mapped substantial portions of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Abel Janszoon Tasman (* 1603 in Lutjegast, Groningen; † 10. Oktober 1659 in Batavia, Java) war ein niederländischer Seefahrer. Auf seinen Entdeckungsreisen umsegelte er den australischen Kontinent und erreichte am 13. Dezember 1642 als erster Europäer Neuseeland.Nach ihm sind unter anderem die australische Insel Tasmanien (zuvor Van Diemen's Land), die australische Tasman-Halbinsel, die Tasmanische See zwischen Australien und Neuseeland sowie der Abel Tasman National Park und die Tasman Bay in Neuseeland und ein Warenwirtschafts-System benannt.

Abel Janszoon Tasman (ur. w 1603 w Lutjegast, Holandia, zm. 10 października 1659 w Batawii, Holenderskie Indie Wschodnie (ob. Dżakarta, Indonezja)) – holenderski żeglarz, odkrywca i kupiec.Był pierwszym Europejczykiem, który dopłynął do Tasmanii i Nowej Zelandii podczas wyprawy w latach 1642-43 zorganizowanej przez Holenderską Kompanię Wschodnioindyjską (hol. Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC)). Tasmanię nazwał Anthoonij van Diemenslandt na cześć swojego sponsora, gubernatora Holenderskich Indii Wschodnich. Anglicy skrócili nazwę do Ziemi Van Diemena, a potem zmienili ją na Tasmania. Podczas drugiej wyprawy w (1644) sporządził mapy północnego wybrzeża Australii.
