Abbas II of Egypt

Sir Abbas Hilmi Pasha or Abbas II GCB, GCMG, GCVO (Arabic: عباس حلمي باشا) (July 14, 1874, Alexandria –  19 December 1944, Geneva) was the last khedive of Egypt (January 8, 1892 – December 19,  1914).Abbas Hilmi Pasha was the great-great-grandson of Mehmet Ali. He succeeded his father, Tawfiq Pasha, as khedive of Egypt. As a boy he visited England, and he had an English tutor for some time in Cairo. He then went to school in Lausanne, and from there passed on to the Theresianum in Vienna. In addition to Turkish, his mother tongue, he acquired fluency in Arabic, and a good conversational knowledge of English, French and German.

Abbas II. (* 14. Juli 1874 in Alexandria; † 20. Dezember 1944 in Genf), eigentl. Abbas Hilmi Pascha, war der letzte  Khedive (türkischer Vizekönig) von Ägypten von 1892 bis 1914. Abbas Hilmi II. war der Sohn des Khediven Tawfiq von Ägypten. 1892 wurde er der Nachfolger seines Vaters. Mit der Besetzung Ägyptens durch britische Truppen im Zuge der Zerschlagung der Urabi-Bewegung 1882 hatte Großbritannien die Kontrolle über das Land übernommen ohne dessen Zuordnung zum Osmanischen Reich zu beenden. Abbas II. war formell weiterhin Vasall der Osmanen. Die britische Herrschaft wurde durch den Generalkonsul vertreten, der als Berater des Khediven der tatsächliche Herrscher des Landes war.

Abbas II Hilmi, po arabsku: عباس حلمي باشا (ur. 14 lipca w Aleksandrii 1874, zm. 19 grudnia 1944 w Genewie) – ostatni kedyw Egiptu (panował w latach 1892-1914).Abbas II był praprawnukiem Muhammada Alego i następcą swego ojca Taufika. Będąc chłopcem odwiedził Wielką Brytanię i posiadał angielskiego wychowawcę w Kairze. Uczęszczał do szkoły w Lozannie, a następnie w Wiedniu. Potrafił porozumieć się po turecku (był to jego język ojczysty), a także po arabsku, angielsku, francusku i niemiecku.

Nel 1892 successe al padre Tawfiq, e cercò inizialmente rendere l'Egitto libero dal protettorato (non formale) che di fatto l'Inghilterra esercitava sul paese e che durava ormai da dieci anni: i suoi propositi indipendentisti furono però ben presto stroncati e quindi fu costretto a seguire una linea politica fortemente influenzata dall'Inghilterra.
