Aarau

Aarau is the capital of the northern Swiss canton of Aargau. The city is also the capital of the district of Aarau. It is German-speaking and predominantly Protestant. Aarau is situated on the Swiss plateau, in the valley of the Aar, on the river's right bank, and at the southern foot of the Jura mountains, and is west of Zurich. The municipality borders directly on the Canton of Solothurn to the west. It is the third-largest city in Aargau after Wettingen and Baden.

Ausgesprochen wird der Name [], im einheimischen Dialekt []. Die Stadt liegt an der Aare – dem längsten Schweizer Fluss – und am Südrand des Jura-Gebirges. Die westliche Stadtgrenze ist gleichzeitig die Grenze zum Kanton Solothurn. Die nach Wettingen und Baden drittgrösste Stadt des Kantons Aargau (AG) ist das Zentrum einer Agglomeration (Ballungsgebiet) mit über 70.000 Einwohnern. Von März bis September 1798 war Aarau die erste Hauptstadt der gesamten damaligen Schweiz (siehe auch Helvetik).

Aarau è una città (15.670 abitanti, al 31 dic. 2006), capoluogo del cantone di Argovia, in Svizzera.Aarau fu fondata dai conti di Kyburg attorno al 1241, con la funzione di piazzaforte a difesa della valle dell'Aar (da cui prende il nome), posta in una zona strategica, su una piana alluvionale sulla riva del fiume, ai piedi dei monti della catena del Giura. La città passò poi per oltre un secolo sotto il possesso degli Asburgo, a partire dal 1265. La fortezza fu quindi presa dai bernesi nel 1415, e, sotto il dominio napoleonico, divenne capitale della Repubblica Elvetica nel 1798, mantenendo questo ruolo fino al 1803. Nella scuola cantonale studiò Albert Einstein.
