Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the sixteenth President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1861 until his death on April 15, 1865. As an outspoken opponent of the expansion of slavery, he won the Republican Party nomination in 1860 and was elected president later that year. During his term, he helped preserve the United States by leading the defeat of the secessionist Confederate States of America in the American Civil War. He introduced measures that resulted in the abolition of slavery, issuing his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and promoting the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution in 1865.

April 1865 in Washington, D.C.) wurde 1860 zum 16. Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika gewählt und 1864 wiedergewählt.Er war einer der bedeutendsten Präsidenten der USA und der erste aus den Reihen der Republikanischen Partei. Nach der Sezession von elf sklavenhaltenden Südstaaten führte er die Nordstaaten durch den Bürgerkrieg, setzte die Wiederherstellung der Union durch und betrieb die Sklavenbefreiung. Unter seiner Regierung schlugen die USA den Weg zum zentral regierten, modernen Industriestaat ein und schufen so die Basis für ihren Aufstieg zur Weltmacht im 20. Jahrhundert.

È considerato sia dalla storiografia sia dall'opinione pubblica uno dei più importanti e popolari presidenti degli Stati Uniti.Fu il presidente che pose fine alla schiavitù, prima con la Proclamazione dell'Emancipazione (1863), che liberò gli schiavi negli Stati dell'Unione, e poi con la ratifica del Tredicesimo Emendamento della Costituzione Americana, con il quale nel 1865 la schiavitù venne abolita in tutti gli Stati Uniti. A Lincoln è riconosciuto il merito di aver allo stesso tempo preservato l'unità federale della nazione, sconfiggendo gli Stati Confederati d'America (favorevoli al mantenimento della schiavitù) nella Guerra di secessione americana.

Abraham Lincoln (Hodgenville, Kentucky, 12 de Fevereiro de 1809 — Washington, DC, 15 de Abril de 1865) foi o 16º (1861-1865) presidente dos Estados Unidos e o primeiro presidente do Partido Republicano dos Estados Unidos da América.Décimo-sexto presidente dos Estados Unidos da América, governou de 1861 a 1865. Sua eleição para a presidência dos Estados Unidos, em 1860, provocou manifestações que levariam à Guerra de Secessão. Soube preservar a unidade do país durante essa guerra civil.Muitos dos seus discursos e trabalhos escritos constituem um depoimento clássico sobre os ideais e objetivos democráticos. Lincoln foi o primeiro presidente eleito pelo Partido Republicano. Após o seu assassinato, sucedeu-lhe no cargo o vice-presidente Andrew Johnson. O povo norte-americano pouco sabia a respeito de Lincoln quando ele assumiu a Presidência. Nada em sua experiência passada indicava que poderia enfrentar com êxito a maior crise da história do país. Lincoln recebeu menos de 40% da votação popular. Como presidente, foi muitas vezes negligente e pouco eficiente, cedendo a pressões políticas.
