A 1

adj. A-one, excellent, outstanding; of first quality, first rate, of the highest quality, quality "A"; first class; first rate

A1 means "very good" or in the best possible condition. It is usually considered to derive from the shipping insurers, Lloyds of London's description of "A1 at Lloyd's", a first class ship. It was also a term popularised by the British War Office ABC system of classification for recruits in the First World War. A-1 recruits were considered fit for general service overseas.

Svea artilleriregemente (Svealand Artillery Regiment), designation A 1, was a Swedish Army artillery regiment that traced its origins back to the 17th century. It was disbanded in 1997. The regiment's soldiers were originally recruited from Svealand, and it was also garrisoned there.

A registry mark given by underwriters (as at Lloyd's) to ships in first-class condition. Inferior grades are indicated by A 2 and A 3.
