Austral es un adjetivo de la lengua castellana que tiene su origen en el latín australis. Se utiliza para designar preferentemente puntos geográficos situados al sur: Hemisferio Austral, Polo Austral, Chaco Austral, etc. Es así como surgieron los nombres para países como Australia, por su ubicación dentro del globo. Su contraparte es la voz boreal.
