Athy – pronounced (IPA) /əˈθaɪ/ – (Baile Átha Í in Irish) is a market town situated at the convergence of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal in County Kildare, Ireland, 72 kilometers southwest of Dublin. Its population of 7.943 (2006 Census) makes it the sixth largest town in Kildare and the 50th largest in the Republic of Ireland, with a growth rate of 31.3pc since the 2002 census.The town is named after a second century AD chieftain Ae who was killed on the river crossing thus giving the town its name meaning "the town by Ae's ford".

Athy (Gealisch: Baile Átha Í) is een plaats in County Kildare aan de rand van de rivier de Barrow en het Grand Canal. Het is 72 kilomter ten zuidwesten van Dublin gelegen.Met een inwonertal van 7.943 (volgens de 2006 census) is het de op 6 na grootste plaats in Kildare en is het de 50ste in de Republiek. De stad is met 31,3% gegroeid sinds de laatste volkstelling (census).De stad is vernoemd naar ene Ae die in de tweede eeuw gedood werd bij het oversteken van de rivier. De naam betekent "De stad bij Ae's doorwaadbare plaats".
