ASCII art

ASCII art is an artistic medium that relies primarily on computers for presentation and consists of pictures pieced together from the 95 printable (from a total of 128) characters defined by the ASCII Standard from 1967 and ASCII compliant character sets with proprietary extended characters (beyond the 128 characters of the 7-bit standard ASCII). The term is also loosely used to refer to text based art in general. ASCII art can be created with any text editor, and is often used with free-form languages. Most examples of ASCII art require a fixed-width font (non-proportional fonts, like on a traditional typewriter) such as Courier for presentation.

L'art ASCII consiste à réaliser des images uniquement à l'aide des lettres et caractères spéciaux contenus dans le code ASCII. Cette pratique a commencé avec les mainframes, où ce genre d'images permettait de montrer ce qu'il était possible de faire avec une imprimante bien menée. Les images étaient alors d'une largeur de 120 ou 132 caractères pour une longueur variable, et autorisaient les superpositions multiples de caractères. Une image de ce type très répandue dans les années 60 était un portait de Brigitte Bardot. Des machines couplées à des caméras vidéo imprimèrent par la suite des portraits sur papier dans des galeries commerciales (parfois aussi sur des T-shirts  par une méthode de transfert).

ASCII-Art (englisch für ASCII-Kunst) ist eine Kunstrichtung, die mit den Zeichen des ASCII-Zeichensatzes kleine Piktogramme oder ganze Bilder darzustellen versucht. Prinzipiell wird dazu nur ein einfacher Texteditor mit nichtproportionaler Schrift benötigt, welche auch beim Betrachter eingestellt sein muss. Mittlerweile existieren aber auch spezialisierte Programme, die das Zeichnen erleichtern und mit denen sich auch Animationen gestalten lassen.

ASCII-Art to sposób tworzenia bardzo prostych rysunków w programach komputerowych, w których pracuje się z tekstem (np. edytory, programy pocztowe, itp.). Rysunki te są układane za pomocą zwykłych znaków ASCII, stawianych na obszarze o stałej szerokości kolumn (stałej ilości znaków w każdym wierszu) oraz o stałej wysokości znaków (tym samym stopniu pisma). Tego typu sposób tworzenia grafiki, a raczej jej symbolizowania, nosi nazwę semigrafiki. Pierwotnie rysunki ASCII-Art tworzono w programach pracujących w trybie tekstowym, z czasem zaczęto tworzyć je również w programach pracujących w trybie graficznym, wykorzystując fonty o stałym kroju pisma.

L'Arte ASCII è un mezzo artistico che si basa principalmente sui computer come supporto di presentazione; consiste di immagini prodotte componendo i 95 caratteri ASCII. In maniera leggermente impropria, il termine viene anche usato per indicare altre forme artistiche basate sull'uso di caratteri tipografici in generale. Immagini d'arte ASCII possono essere create con ogni editor di testo, e sono talvolta usate in combinazione con i linguaggi di programmazione per produrre programmi per computer il cui testo forma un disegno o una immagine. La maggior parte degli esempi di arte ASCII richiedono, per una corretta visualizzazione, l'uso di caratteri a larghezza fissa (come quelli di una tradizionale macchina per scrivere), come ad esempio il Courier.
