American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII), generally pronounced ask-ee ([1]), is a character encoding based on the English alphabet. ASCII codes represent text in computers, communications equipment, and other devices that work with text. Most modern character encodings — which support many more characters than did the original — have a historical basis in ASCII.

C'est également la variante américaine du codage de caractères ISO/CEI 646. ASCII contient les caractères nécessaires pour écrire en anglais. Elle a été inventée par l'américain Bob Bemer en 1961. Elle est à la base de nombreuses autres normes comme ISO 8859-1 et Unicode qui l'étendent.

American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII, alternativ US-ASCII, oft [] ausgesprochen) ist eine 7-Bit-Zeichenkodierung und bildet die US-Variante von ISO 646 sowie die Grundlage für spätere mehrbittige Zeichensätze und -kodierungen.ASCII, auch als ANSI X3.4-1968 bezeichnet, wurde im Jahr 1967 erstmals als Standard veröffentlicht und im Jahr 1986 zuletzt aktualisiert. Die Zeichenkodierung definiert 128 Zeichen, davon 33 nicht-druckbare sowie folgende 95 druckbare. Sie lauten, beginnend mit dem Leerzeichen: Die Zeichen umfassen das lateinische Alphabet in Groß- und Kleinschreibung, die zehn arabischen Ziffern sowie einige Satz- und Steuerzeichen. Der Zeichenvorrat entspricht weitgehend dem einer Tastatur oder Schreibmaschine für die englische Sprache. In Computern und anderen elektronischen Geräten, die Text darstellen, wird dieser in der Regel gemäß ASCII oder abwärtskompatibel (z. B.  ISO 8859, UTF-8) dazu gespeichert.

ASCII [aski] (ang. American Standard Code for Information Interchange) - 7-bitowy kod przyporządkowujący liczby z zakresu 0-127 literom (alfabetu angielskiego), cyfrom, znakom przestankowym i innym symbolom oraz poleceniom sterującym. Przykładowo litera "a" jest kodowana liczbą 97, a polecenie "powrót karetki" – liczbą 13.

ASCII è l'acronimo di American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ovvero Codice Standard Americano per lo Scambio di Informazioni), pronunciato in inglese äschi , mentre in italiano è comunemente pronunciato asci .È un sistema di codifica dei caratteri a 7 bit (in realtà 8 bit, di cui uno usato come bit di parità per rilevare eventuali errori) comunemente utilizzato nei calcolatori, proposto dall'ingegnere dell'IBM Bob Bemer nel 1961, e successivamente accettato come standard dall'ISO (ISO 646).Alla specifica iniziale basata su codici di 7 bit fecero seguito negli anni molte proposte di estensione ad 8 bit, con lo scopo di raddoppiare il numero di caratteri rappresentabili. Nei PC IBM si fa per l'appunto uso di una di queste estensioni, ormai standard di fatto, chiamata extended ASCII o high ASCII. In questo ASCII esteso, i caratteri aggiunti sono vocali accentate, simboli semigrafici e altri simboli di uso meno comune. I caratteri extended ASCII sono codificati nei cosiddetti codepage.
