ARTERIES

Arteries are muscular blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. All arteries, with the exception of the pulmonary and umbilical arteries, carry oxygenated blood.The circulatory system is extremely important for sustaining life. Its proper functioning is responsible for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all cells, as well as the removal of carbon dioxide and waste products, maintenance of optimum pH, and the mobility of the elements, proteins and cells of the immune system. In developed countries, the two leading causes of death, myocardial infarction and stroke each may directly result from an arterial system that has been slowly and progressively compromised by years of deterioration. Die Arterie (von griech.  - mit Luft gefüllt), ist ein Blutgefäß, welches das Blut vom Herz wegführt. Es ist nach den an großen Arterien spürbaren Pulsen des Herzschlags auch Schlagader oder Pulsader benannt. Durch ihren Aufbau sollen sie den vom Herzen erzeugten Blutdruck möglichst stabil halten. Arterien transportieren in der Regel sauerstoffreiches Blut (deshalb die alte Bezeichnung „arterielles Blut“), nur die Arterien des Lungenkreislaufs enthalten sauerstoffarmes Blut. In den Arterien des Menschen sind nur etwa 20 es gesamten Blutvolumens enthalten.

Per convenzione si definisce arteria un vaso sanguigno che nasce dai ventricoli.Dal ventricolo destro parte l'arteria polmonare, che conduce sangue poco ossigenato ai polmoni, mentre dal ventricolo sinistro l'aorta, che distribuisce sangue arterializzato a tutto il corpo. Queste arterie di grande calibro si vanno via via ramificando in arterie di medio e piccolo calibro fino alle arteriole precapillari. La struttura delle arterie si modifica con il variare del loro calibro.
