ARCnet

ARCNET (also CamelCased as ARCnet, an acronym from Attached Resource Computer NETwork) is a local area network (LAN) protocol, similar in purpose to Ethernet or Token Ring. ARCNET was the first widely available networking system for microcomputers and became popular in the 1980s for office automation tasks. It has since gained a following in the embedded systems market, where certain features of the protocol are especially useful.

ArcNet jest standardem kart sieciowych obecnie niemal całkowicie wypartym przez alternatywny standard - Ethernet.Karty typu ArcNet pozwalają na transmisję danych z prędkościami od 2,5 Mb/s do 100 Mb/s na odległości do 4 km. Jako medium wykorzystują 93 omowy RG62 kabel koncentryczny lub pojedynczą parę telefoniczną, dzięki czemu często znajdują zastosowanie w miejscach, gdzie możliwość zastosowania Ethenetu wyklucza brak drugiej pary skrętki. Wersja 100 Mbit pracuje z protokołem TCenet (Thomas Conrad) i ma mało wspólnego z Arcnet, wykorzystuje tylko ten sam koncentryk RG62 jako medium transmisyjne.

La tipologia di rete ARCNET non è più diffusa. La velocità di base della rete si può stimare sui 2 Mbit/s. Ogni host collegato a questa rete era identificato con un numero "intero" di 8 bit, quindi si potevano avere al massimo 256 apparati, sia client che server. All'interno della rete il numero assegnato a ciascuna scheda di rete impostava la priorità dell'apparato di accedere al mezzo trasmissivo ( in parole povere al cavo per inviare i dati ). La topologia affiancata a questa tipologia era quella a "centro stella".
