Eine antibiotikaassoziierte Kolitis oder pseudomembranöse Kolitis entsteht, wenn die Darmflora (meist iatrogen bedingt) durch Antibiotika so sehr geschädigt wird, dass sich auf diese Weise das Bakterium Clostridium difficile sehr stark vermehren kann.
