ANEITYUM

Anatom (more commonly spelled Aneityum, and sometimes also Kéamu) is the southernmost inhabited island of Vanuatu. It is in the province of Tafea. The largest village is Anelghowhat (correctly, Anelcauhat).There is an airport, not on the main island itself, but on the tiny island to its south, Inyeug (correctly, Iñec), which has twice-weekly flights from Port Vila and Tanna.Anatom has a current estimated population of 550. It is believed to have had a population of possibly as large as 12,000 prior to the arrival of the Europeans in 1793. Introduced diseases and blackbirding are believed to have been the major factors in the depopulation. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and beaches. The main language of Anatom is called Aneityumese or Anejom. It is considered to constitute its own branch of the South Vanuatu languages.

Anatom (auch Aneityum oder Keamu) bezeichnet eine Insel im südwestlichen Pazifik. Die Insel gehört zur Provinz Tafea des Inselstaats Vanuatu, der früher unter der Bezeichnung Neue Hebriden bekannt war.Die Insel Anatom hat eine ovale Form, ist ca. 65 km² groß und besteht aus 2 Basalt-Stratovulkanen. An der Küste gibt es zahlreiche Buchten und Korallenriffe. Das Klima ist tropisch bis subtropisch. Die höchste Erhebung liegt 852 m über dem Meeresspiegel.Zur Kolonialzeit wurden die Kauri-Wälder der Insel ausgebeutet, und die Insel diente als Ankerplatz für die Walfänger im Südpazifik. Heute wird neben den traditionellen Südsee-Erzeugnissen (wie Kopra) auch Pfeffer, Sandelholz und Kakao angebaut. Der Tauch-Tourismus spielt inzwischen eine wichtige Rolle.

Il principale villaggio è Anelghowhat.C'è un aeroporto, non sulla stessa isola principale, ma su un piccolo isolotto a sud, Inyeug (correttamente, Iñec), con due voli settimanali per  Port Vila e Tanna. Anatom ha una popolazione corrente stimata di 550 abitamti. Si ritiene avesse avuto in passato una popolazione molto superiore, forse 12000 prima dell'arrivo degli europei nel 1793. Ma le malattie portate dagli europei e il blackbirding hanno favorito il graduale spopolamento. L'isola è circondata da barriere coralline e da spiagge. La lingua principale di Anatom è chiamata Aneityumese (o Anejom).

Anatom is een eiland van Vanuatu, vallend onder de provincie Tafea. Het is 145 km² groot en het hoogste punt is 850 m. Anatom is het zuidelijkste eiland van Vanuatu, als de door Frankrijk voor Nieuw-Caledonië geclaimde eilanden Hunter Island en Matthew Island buiten beschouwing blijven.
