ALTOCUMULUS CLOUD

Altocumulus (alto, "high", cumulus, "heaped") is a cloud belonging to a class characterized by globular masses or rolls in layers or patches, the individual elements being larger and darker than those of cirrocumulus and smaller than those of stratocumulus. Like other cumulus clouds, altocumulus signifies convection. It is usually white or gray, and often occurs in sheets or patches with wavy, rounded masses or rolls. Altocumulus often are seen preceding a cold front, and their presence on a warm, humid, summer morning frequently signals the development of thunderstorms later in the day.

Altocumuli (v. lat. altum = Höhe und cumulus = Anhäufung; Abk.: Ac) sind weiße und/oder graue Flecken, Felder oder Schichten von Wolken, im allgemeinen mit Eigenschatten aus schuppenartigen Teilen, Ballen, Walzen usw. bestehend, die manchmal teilweise faserig oder diffus aussehen und zusammengewachsen sein können. Wegen der stärkeren Winde sind sie meist etwas länglicher, kleiner und stärker ausgefranst als niedrigere Wolken, sie sind aber trotz allem schwer von den Stratocumuli und Cirrocumuli zu unterscheiden. Einige Unterschiede gibt es trotzdem: Erstens die Breite - Altocumuli sind bis drei Finger breit (bei ausgestrecktem Arm), alle Haufenschichtwolken, die größer sind, sind dann eben Stratocumuli, und die Cirrocumuli sind weniger als einen Finger breit. Und zweitens der Eigenschatten, der beim Cirrocumulus nicht auftritt. Wolken ohne Eigenschatten werden Altocumulus genannt, wenn der größere Teil der Wolkenteile ein bis drei Finger breit ist.

Altocumulus [łac.] (Ac – chmura średnia kłębiasta) złożona z białych lub szarych brył (także warstw). Składa się z kropel wody, ale nie jest to chmura opadowa. Występuje na wysokości od 2 400 do 6 100 m. Maja grubość od 200 do 700 m. Utrzymuje się stosunkowo krótko.

Un altocumulo è una nube media che si presenta sotto forma di fiocchi globulari compatti che si estendono su vaste estensioni planari situate ad una altitudine che può variare tra i 3000 ed i 6000 metri. L'ampiezza di questo fenomeno nuvoloso può estendersi a tutto il cielo visibile oppure a grandi settori di questo, ben delineate e marcate rispetto ad un cielo sereno; in altri casi gli altocumuli si alternano ad altostrati, oppure a fenomeni nuvolosi di altitudine più elevata, quali cirrostrati o veli. Frequentemente l'altocumulo si presenta come una serie parallela di cilindri compatti, oppure di strisce di fiocchi allineati in ranghi di conformazione ondosa. Lo spessore dello strato nuvoloso è molto ridotto e regolare.
