Alak is a close relative of the board game Go played on a one-dimensional "board". It was originally described in A. K. Dewdney's 1984 book The Planiverse; in 2001, Alan Baljeu modified the game to its present state.The rules are as follows:Black and white take turns placing stones on the line. Unlike Go, this placement is compulsory if a move is available; if no move is possible, the game is over.No stone may be placed in a location occupied by another stone, or in a location where a stone of your own colour has just been removed. The latter condition keeps the game from entering a neverending loop of stone placement and capture, known in Go as Ko.If placing a stone causes one or two groups of enemy stones to no longer have any adjacent empty spaces--liberties, as in Go--then those stones are removed. As the above rule states, the opponent may not play in those locations on their following turn.If placing a stone causes one or two groups of your own colour to no longer have any liberties, the stones are not suicided, but instead are safe and not removed from play. Play continues until a player cannot place a stone on their turn. At this point, the number of stones on the board is counted; the winner is the one with the most stones. According to the Alak web page, the board may range from 7 to 26 spaces. In The Planiverse, the board has eleven spaces.

Alak (arab. آلاك, fr. Aleg) - miasto w południowej Mauretanii, stolica regionu Al-Barakina. Alak leży ok. 250 kilometrów na południowy wschód od Nawakszutu przy Route de l'Espoir ("Drodze Nadzei") - trasie komunikacyjnej łączącej Nawakszut z An-Namą. Miasto jest ważnym węzłem komunikacyjnym, położonym w połowie drogi między Kifą - jednym z większych miast na południu Mauretanii, a stolicą kraju Nawakszutem. Dodatkowo drogi odchodzą stąd na południe w kierunku Kajhajdi.

Alak suresi (Arapça: سورة العلق) Kur'an-ı Kerim'in 96. suresi.19 ayetten oluşmaktadır. Mekke'de inmiştir. İslam peygamberine ilk inen ayetler bu surenin ilk ayetleridir. Ünlü, 'Yaradan Rabbi'nin adıyla oku' cümlesi bu surenin ilk ayetidir.Eski tefsirlerde(!) “alak” sözcüğünün karşılıgı, kelimenin sözlük anlamlarının dışında “kan pıhtısı” olarak yer alıyordu. Bunun nedeni; ya ilk Yunan hekimi Hipokrat ve takipçilerinin etkisi, ya da düşük yapan bir kadında, düşük halindeki ceninin, rahim kanıyla karışık görüntüsünün kabaca izlenimiydi. “Alak” sözcüğü; “birleşmek, bitişmek, asılı olmak, cezp etmek, gönülden sevgi ve aşk” anlamlarına gelmektedir. İnsanın yaratılışındaki “alak” evresi, “nutfe” evresinden sonradır. Nutfe/ spermatozoid tarafından döllenen yumurta, rahime yapışır. Böylece embriyon, rahim üzerinde bir kök oluşturarak rahime çengelle asılmış bir görünüm arz eder ve o kök ile beslenir. Rahime asılı bu döllenmiş yumurta adeta bir parazit pozisyonunu andırır. Başka bir ifadeyle aslında bu “lârva” yani embriyon kurtçuğu, parazitin bizzat kendisidir. Cenin hamilelik süresince bir parazit olarak anneden beslenir.
