SAR) coordinator, the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) serves as the single agency responsible for coordinating on-land federal
SAR activities in the 48 contiguous
United States,
Mexico and
Canada. Some of the the Rescue Centers notable missions include the search for John F. Kennedy, the Payne Stewart mishap, the unfortunate events of 9/11, the Space Shuttle Columbia mission and more recently the search for world-record setting adventurer Steve Fossett.
