"Ægis" has entered modern English to mean a shield, protection, or sponsorship, originally from the name of the mythological protective shield of Zeus. The name has been extended to many other entities, and the concept of a protective shield is found in other mythologies, while its form varies across sources.

Aigis (altgriechisch: αἰγίς, Gen. αἰγίδος,  latein. aegis, -is, davon dt. Ägis) ist ein Gegenstand aus der griechischen Mythologie. Sie bezeichnet ein goldenes Ziegenfell (manchmal auch ein Schild und ähnliches), welches Zeus, bisweilen aber auch Athene oder Apollo, benutzte, um Gewitter heraufziehen zu lassen. Wenn das Fell geschüttelt wird, versendet es Blitz, Donner und Nacht.

Aegis – zintegrowany (sieciowy) system wykrywania, naprowadzania i kierowania ogniem opracowany dla Marynarki Wojennej Stanów Zjednoczonych w latach 70. XX w. Zadaniem systemu jest ochrona przeciwlotnicza i przeciwrakietowa obszaru działań floty lub wspieranego przez US Navy lądowego teatru działań. System jest także wykorzystywany do niszczenia celów nawodnych i podwodnych. Nazwa systemu pochodzi z języka greckiego (aigís ‘kozia skóra’) od mitologicznej pokrytej skórą kozy Amaltei tarczy boga Zeusa, wykonanej dla niego przez Hefajstosa. Tarczą tą bogini Atena miała osłaniać walczących żołnierzy (stąd „pod egidą” — pod patronatem, opieką).

Egida (z greckiego. aegis, łac. aigis - dłoń koźla, tarcza Zeusa) - wg mitologii greckiej, tarcza Zeusa wykuta przez Hefajstosa (wg innej wersji, zrobiona ze skóry kozy Amaltei). Była ona atrybutem boga nieba i piorunów. Dała (jeszcze wtedy młodemu) Zeusowi zwycięstwo nad złym ojcem Kronosem, który wcześniej pożarł jego rodzeństwo.

L'egida (dal latino aegis, a sua volta derivato dal greco aigís), è lo scudo di Atena.Generalmente si pensa che sia fatto di pelle di capra, ma da un'opera di Eschilo si è ipotizzato che in origine l'egida fosse immaginata come una nube tempestosa (e precisamente il cerchio di nubi che si addensa sulla testa di Zeus al momento del tuono divino. Infatti vi è somiglianza tra i due termini: aix per capra e kataigís per uragano.

L'attuale prima linea di navi statunitensi si affida ad una famiglia di sistemi integrati di scoperta e elaborazione dati chiamata AEGIS, che in versioni diverse sono presenti a bordo dei cacciatorpediniere classe Arleigh Burke e gli incrociatori classe Ticonderoga. Le sue prestazioni, malgrado il costo elevatissimo, sono tali da renderne possibile il successo anche per alcune unità estere, come i cacciatorpediniere Classe Kongo e le fregate spagnole F-100.
