An actuary is a business professional who deals with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty. Actuaries provide expert assessments of financial security systems, with a focus on their complexity, their mathematics, and their mechanisms .

Aktuare sind mathematisch ausgebildete Sachverständige, die Fragestellungen aus den Bereichen Versicherung, Bausparwesen, Kapitalanlage und Altersversorgung mit mathematischen Methoden der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und Statistik (Versicherungsmathematik, Bausparmathematik und Finanzmathematik) bearbeiten und dafür Lösungen unter Berücksichtigung des rechtlichen und wirtschaftlichen Umfeldes entwickeln.

Aktuariusz - profesjonalista z dziedziny obliczania ryzyka oraz wartości bieżącej projektów finansowych, w szczególności długoterminowych lub obarczonych ryzykiem. Tradycyjnie profesja aktuariusza związana jest z branżą  ubezpieczeń, reasekuracji oraz planów emerytalnych (w Polsce: wycena rezerw na świadczenia pracownicze).
