American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
AASHTO, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, is a standards setting body which publishes specifications, test
protocols and
guidelines which are used in
highway design and construction throughout the
United States. Despite its name, the association represents not only highways but air, rail, water, and public transportation as well.

Une Interstate highway est littéralement une « grande route inter-États » aux
États-Unis, on pourrait plutôt traduire ce terme par «
autoroute inter-États ». Le terme inter-États signifie que ces autoroutes sont financées par le gouvernement fédéral, bien qu'elles appartiennent, soient construites et opérées par les États dans lesquels elles sont situées, la seule exception étant le
Woodrow Wilson Bridge de l'Interstate 495 appartenant à l'État fédéral. Ce système a été créé par
Dwight D. Eisenhower au début des
années 1950, et est aujourd'hui en voie d'achèvement.
