افق a ، خاک بالايي
فوقاني ترين منطقه خاک است و افقي است که رشد و نمو گياهان در آن نفوذ مي کنند. اين افق از مواد خاکي نرم (رس) که غني از مواد آلي و موجودات زنده ميکروسکوپي است تشکيل يافته است که وجود اين مواد آلي باعث رنگ خاکستري تا سياه اين افق مي گردد. البته اين زمين غالبا براي کشاورزي مناسب ميباشند. اکسيدهاي آهن و همچنين بعضي از مواد محلول ممکن است از اين منطقه به افق b برده شوند و در آنجا رسوب کنند.

The uppermost zone in the Soil Profile, from which soluble Salts and Colloids are leached, and in which organic matter has accumulated. Generally this represents the most fertile soil layer. Along with the B-Horizon, this layer constitutes part of the Zone of Eluviation.
