IEEE 802.11b-1999
IEEE 802.11b-1999 or 802.11b, is an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 specification that extended throughput up to 11 Mbit/s using the same 2.4 GHz band. This specification under the marketing name of Wi-Fi has been implemented all over the world. The amendment has been incorporated into the published IEEE 802.11-2007 standard.

IEEE 802.11
IEEE 802.11 (auch: Wireless LAN (WLAN), WiFi) bezeichnet eine für Kommunikation in Funknetzwerken. Herausgeber ist das Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Die erste Version des Standards wurde 1997 verabschiedet. Sie spezifiziert den Mediumszugriff (MAC-Layer) und die physikalische Schicht (vgl. OSI-Modell) für lokale Funknetzwerke.

802.11 to grupa standardów IEEE dotyczących sieci bezprzewodowych sporządzonych przez grupę 11 z IEEE 802. Czasami określenia 802.11 używa się też w stosunku do pierwszego standardu z tej rodziny. Standardy 802.11 stanowią podstawę certyfikatów Wi-Fi.
Rodzina 802.11 obejmuje tak naprawdę trzy zupełnie niezależnie protokoły skupiające się na kodowaniu (a, b, g). Obecnie za bezpieczeństwo odpowiadają oddzielne standardy jak np. 802.11i. Pozostałe standardy jak c-f, h-j oraz n to rozszerzenia usług i poprawki innych standardów z rodziny 802.11.
Pierwszym powszechnie zaakceptowanym standardem był 802.11b, potem weszły 802.11a oraz 802.11g oraz rzadko jeszcze dostępne 802.11n. Dostępne w Polsce sieci Wi-Fi wykorzystują standard 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g oraz 802.11n

IEEE 802.11
IEEE 802.11 o Wi-Fi definisce uno standard per le reti WLAN sviluppato dal gruppo 11 dell'IEEE 802, in particolare in livello fisico e MAC del modello ISO/OSI, specificando sia l'interfaccia tra client e base station (o access point) sia tra client wireless.
Questo termine viene usualmente utilizzato per definire la prima serie di apparecchiature 802.11 sebbene si debba preferire il termine "802.11 legacy".
Questa famiglia di protocolli include tre protocolli dedicati alla trasmissione delle informazioni (a, b, g), la sicurezza è stata inclusa in uno standard a parte, 802.11i. Gli altri standard della famiglia (c, d, e, f, h, ...) riguardano estensioni dei servizi base e miglioramenti di servizi già disponibili. Il primo protocollo largamente diffuso è stato il b; in seguito si sono diffusi il protocollo a e soprattutto il protocollo g.
