7.62 x 51 mm NATO

NATO's 7.62x51mm rifle cartridge was adopted in the 1950s as a standard firearm cartridge among NATO countries, though it has also become popular among civilians.The military 7.62x51mm cartridge is not identical to the commercial .308 Winchester. However, NATO controls specifications for the military round while SAAMI controls specifications for the civilian round. The specifications have been established for two different uses. (1) the SAAMI standard pressure is 50,000 on the (CUP) scale or 62,000 psi, measured with a piezoelectric gauge, for the civilian round. The NATO specification for 7.62x51mm is 50,000 psi. And (2) headspace; the military chamber is specified to be 1.645 inches, compared to the civilian chamber of 1.632 inches. Though this difference is just 0.013 inches, a chamber of acceptable military length will put excessive stress on the thinner civilian brass, causing premature head separation. It is not safe to mix .308 Win and 7.62x51mm ammunition, problems can be encountered due to the maxium pressures developed while firing and this is compunded by the different headspace requirements for each.

En 1954, sous l'influence des États-Unis, l'OTAN adopte, pour les fusils d'assaut et mitrailleuses moyennes, un nouveau calibre : le 7,62 x 51 mm OTAN. En conséquence, la FN Herstal s'empresse d'adapter le FAL qu'elle vient de concevoir pour la nouvelle munition qui est aussi adoptée pour les HK G3 et US M14. La munition est appelée également 7,62 N, 7,62 mm NATO ou même .308 Winchester dans les pays anglo-saxons. La nouvelle munition est toutefois critiquée pour sa puissance excessive pour une arme légère. Le tir automatique est difficilement contrôlable et la taille des munitions limite à la fois la contenance des chargeurs à 20 coups mais aussi le nombre de munitions qu'un soldat peut emmener en opération. Ainsi, les armées japonaise et espagnole utilisèrent des versions sous-chargées de la 7,62 OTAN.

Die Patrone 7,62 × 51 mm NATO ist eine Gewehrpatrone mit großer Verbreitung. Bei Sportschützen ist diese Patrone wegen ihrer hohen Eigenpräzision für Entfernungen bis 300 m sehr beliebt. In den durch die NATO beeinflussten Streitkräften wurde sie für die Verwendung in Sturmgewehren durch die kleinkalibrige 5,56 × 45 mm NATO abgelöst und wird meist nur noch in Maschinengewehren genutzt. Auch hier geht die Tendenz hin zu leichten Maschinenwaffen wie der M249 SAW oder dem MG4, mittelschwere MG wie FN MAG, M60 oder MG3 im Kaliber 7,62 x 51 mm findet nur noch auf Zugebene als Unterstützungswaffe Anwendung.

7,62 x 51 mm NATO (også kjent som jaktpatronen .308 Winchester), er en patron for rifle som ble introdusert med USAs M14-rifle i 1950-årene. I Norge har patronen i lengre tid vært i bruk i AG-3 og MG-3.
