It was the third decade of the 20th century. It is sometimes referred to as the Roaring Twenties or the Jazz Age, when speaking about the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom. In Europe the decade is sometimes referred to as the "Golden Twenties" because of the economic boom following World War I.

Bien que leur fonctionnement traditionnel ait été mis en sommeil pendant le conflit, leur souplesse institutionnelle leur permet d'adopter un exécutif fort à l'issue du conflit, tout en restant – tant bien que mal – ancrées dans un modèle républicain et démocratique.
