the 1920's It is sometimes referred to as the "Jazz Age" or the "Roaring Twenties," usually applied to America. In Europe the decade is sometimes referred to as the Golden Twenties (see 1920s Berlin).Since the closing of the 20th Century, the 1920s has drawn close associations with the 1950s and 1990s, especially in the United States. The three decades are regarded as periods of economic prosperity, which lasted throughout almost the entire decade following a tremendous event that occurred in the previous decade (World War I and Spanish flu in the 1910s, World War II in the 1940s, and the end of the Cold War in the late 1980s).

La désorganisation généralisée des années 1920 À la suite de la Première Guerre mondiale (1914-1918), certains pays connaissent une crise de régime immédiate (Italie, Allemagne, pays de l'Europe orientale), d'autres non. De ce décalage et de ces difficultés naît une instabilité internationale qui met à mal les plans de cohésion avancés par les nouveaux organismes de paix et de coordination, telle la récente Société des Nations. Contre toute attente, ce sont les démocraties parlementaires qui s'adaptent le mieux dans les années 1920. Bien que leur fonctionnement traditionnel ait été mis en sommeil pendant le conflit, leur souplesse institutionnelle leur permet d'adopter un exécutif fort à l'issue du conflit, tout en restant – tant bien que mal – ancrées dans un modèle républicain et démocratique. À l'inverse, les régimes forts et les empires connaissent plus de difficultés.
