魚類屬於脊索動物門中的脊椎動物亞門，一般人把脊椎動物分為魚類（53%）、鳥類（18%）、爬蟲類（12%）、哺乳類（9%）、兩生類（8%）五大類。根據Nelson（1994年）統計，全球現生種魚類共有24618種，占已命名脊椎動物一半以上，且新種魚類不斷被發現，平均每年已約150種計，十多年應已增加超過1500種，所以目前全球已命名的魚種應在26000種以上。
