Typically this involves traversing some distance, but it can be any other task involving speed.

比（ひ）とは2つ（または3つ以上）の数の関係を表したもの。数a, bについて，その比はa:bで表され，「a対b」とよむ。aを前項，bを後項という。また，前項と後項を入れ替えたb:aを元の比の逆比または反比という。このとき，比が意味をもつためにはa≠0，b≠0でなければならない。3数以上の場合も a:b:c のように表し，特に連比（れんぴ）という。例えば，テレビ受像機には様々な大きさがあるが，横の長さを4等分したものと縦の長さを3等分したものとが等しくなるのは，どの大きさのテレビでも変わらない。これをまとめて4:3で表す（ただし，20世紀後半からは16:9の比をもつテレビが普及している）。比において，前項と後項に(0以外の)同じ数をかけたものも同じ比である。つまり，a:b=ka:kb (k≠0)。
