文法における数は、数 (文法)を参照。
数（かず、すう、number）とは、数量を表すために用いられる抽象的な概念である。

数と数字はしばしば混同され、また混同しても問題がない場合もあるが、本質的には異なることに注意されたい。数字とは数を表すための記号である。これに対して、数とは我々の頭の中にある極めて抽象的な何かである。

例えば、リンゴが1個あるのとみかんが1個あるのは全く異なる事実であるが、我々はそこに何らかの共通するものを見出し、それを 1 と名付けている。 1 という数それ自体はリンゴやみかんではないし、それが存在するという事実を指す訳でもないし、まして縦や横に引かれた短い線分のことを言うわけではない。
