大阪市位於日本本州西部，近畿平原，面臨大阪湾。古時作為京都的外港。與京都、神戶合稱為京阪神。是西日本、近畿地方、京阪神都市圏及大阪都市圏的行政、産業、文化、交通中心，也是大阪府府廳所在地。白天人口僅次於東京都為全國第二名，夜間人口次於橫濱市為全國第三名。
