城市指的是人口较為稠密、工商業較為發達的地区，一般包括了住宅区、工业区和商业区并且具备行政管辖功能。城市的行政管辖功能可能涉及较其本身更广泛的区域。城市中有楼房、街道和公园等公共设施。参见：市中国的城市为行政建制，不能完全反应城市化与一个地区的工业化发展水平；中国大陆的城市作为行政建制分为直辖市、省辖市(地级市与副省级城市)和县级市，反应一个城市的工业化水平的主要指数有非农业人口占总人口的比例、人均GDP水平和非农业GDP占GDP总量的比例。
