Taiwan (; Taiwanese: Tâi-oân) is an island in East Asia. "Taiwan" is also commonly used to refer to the territories administered by the Republic of China (ROC) and to ROC itself, which governs the island of Taiwan, Lanyu (Orchid Island) and Green Island in the Pacific off the Taiwan coast, the Pescadores in the Taiwan Strait, and Kinmen and the Matsu Islands off the coast of mainland Fujian. The island groups of Taiwan and Penghu (except the municipalities of Taipei and Kaohsiung) are officially administered as Taiwan Province of the Republic of China.

台湾（たいわん、繁体字（正体字）：、但し正式な文章においてはと表記。）は東アジア、太平洋の西岸に在る台湾島を中心とした地域の名称。1945年以降は一貫して中華民国の統治下にあり、1949年の中華人民共和国成立に伴う中華民国政府の台湾移転以降は、中華民国の通称としても用いられる。ただし、中華人民共和国も統治権を主張しており、両政府間で問題となっている。

-{zh-hans:台湾;zh-hant:台灣（臺灣）}-為位於亞洲東部、太平洋西北邊的一座島嶼，面積約36,188平方公里，目前由中華民國政府實際管轄。 台灣係由歐亞大陸板塊、菲律賓海洋板塊擠壓而隆起的島嶼，整體形狀似長條蕃薯狀，北迴歸線經過台湾島。全島山勢高峻，山脈大多呈北北東-南南西走向、平原狹窄、地震頻仍、溫泉與死火山皆多。氣候上屬高溫、多雨，最冷月的月均溫都在14℃以上，年雨量達2510mm以上。北部全年有雨，南部則集中在夏季降雨，颱風亦常在夏、秋兩季侵襲台灣。由於前述地形之故，所以造成台灣有熱帶、亞熱帶、溫帶、寒帶等氣候區，而自然景觀亦因此呈現多樣化。台灣至2007年12月底總人口約有22,958,360人，河洛人佔多數，其他尚有客家人、原住民、外省籍人士等。文字官訂為正體中文，語言主要有閩南語（台語）、標準漢語（台灣稱國語）、客家話及各族群原住民語言。產業方面則以半導體產業、熱帶農產品等賺取外匯，目前朝向奈米、光電發展。進口則以能源為主，目前亦極力推動觀光事業。
