An étude (; , a French word meaning study) is an instrumental musical composition, most commonly of considerable difficulty, usually designed to provide practice material for perfecting a particular technical skill. The tradition of writing études emerged in the early 19th century with the rapidly growing popularity of the piano. Of the vast number of études from that era some are still used as teaching material (particularly pieces by Carl Czerny and Muzio Clementi), and a few, by major composers such as Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy and Charles-Valentin Alkan, achieved a place in today's concert repertory. Composers of the 20th century variously composed études related to the old tradition (György Ligeti), études that required wholly unorthodox technique (John Cage), and études that required unusually facile technique.

Eine Etüde (oV Etude) (frz.) ist in ihrem ursprünglichen Wortsinn („les études“ = Studium; „étudier“ = studieren) ein Instrumentalwerk für ein Soloinstrument, das dem Musizierenden zu größeren Fertigkeiten auf seinem Instrument verhelfen soll. Beispielhaft hierfür stehen die Klavieretüden von Carl Czerny sowie die Ausführliche theoretisch-practische Anweisung zum Pianoforte-Spiel von Johann Nepomuk Hummel.

En musique classique, une étude est, à l'origine, une pièce destinée à améliorer certains aspects techniques d'un élève ou d'un interprète. Toutefois, certaines études — comme celles de Frédéric Chopin pour le piano, ou de Heitor Villa-Lobos pour la guitare — sont de véritables pièces de concert dont les difficultés n'atténuent pas la valeur artistique.

Etyd (fr. étude), studium, studie, övningsstycke; musik, musikstycke, avsett att utbilda färdigheten att spela ett instrument. Vanligen genomförs i ett sådant stycke en figur eller passage i olika lägen och vändningar. Man skiljer mellan etyder för den blott mekaniska färdigheten och sådana för ett smakfullt föredrag. De senare har ofta ett självständigt musikaliskt värde och används till konsertstycken (konsert-etyd). Förträffliga etyder för piano skrev Cramer, Clementi, Bertini, Czerny och till virtuosändamål Chopin, Moscheles, Liszt, Rubinstein med flera; för violin bland andra Rode och Kreutzer.

Etiuda - forma muzyczna, zwykle na instrument solowy. Początkowo etiuda była formą wyłącznie dydaktyczną, przeznaczoną dla uczniów w celu ćwiczeń technicznych. Z czasem stała się samodzielną formą, skierowaną na techniczną złożoność, wymagającą od instrumentalisty brawury oraz wirtuozerskich umiejętności. Wielkimi twórcami etiud byli Fryderyk Chopin, Robert Schumann, Niccolo Paganini i Henryk Wieniawski. Cykl 18 etiud na fortepian skomponował György Ligeti.
