Erosion is displacement of solids (soil, mud, rock and other particles) usually by the agents of currents such as, wind, water, or ice by downward or down-slope movement in response to gravity or by living organisms (in the case of bioerosion).Erosion is distinguished from weathering, which is the breaking down of rock and particles through processes where no movement is involved, although the two processes may be concurrent.Erosion is an intrinsic natural process but in many places it is increased by human land use. Poor land use practices include deforestation, overgrazing, unmanaged construction activity and road or trail building. However, improved land use practices can limit erosion, using techniques like terrace-building and tree planting.

L'erosione è quel fenomeno che ha come effetto l'esportazione graduale di suolo o roccia ad opera di agenti quali il vento, l'acqua o il ghiaccio oppure per effetto di movimenti gravitativi o, infine, per digestione da parte di organismi viventi (bioerosione). L'erosione è contemporanea o successiva all'alterazione generata da processi chimici o fisici. L'erosione può avere effetti negativi sulle attività antropiche, in particolare sull'agricoltura perché può sottrarre terreno utile alle coltivazioni ma non solo: la torbidità delle acque cariche di sedimenti possono alterare alcuni ecosistemi. Per prevenire l'erosione generata dal ruscellamento diffuso è possibile intervenire con progetti di fitosistemazione, piantando arbusti o alberi con un ampio apparato radicale in grado di ancorare il terreno.
