Area is a quantity that expresses the extent of a two-dimensional surface or shape in the plane. Area can be understood as the amount of material with a given thickness that would be necessary to fashion a model of the shape, or the amount of paint necessary to cover the surface with a single coat. It is the two-dimensional analog of the length of a curve (a one-dimensional concept) or the volume of a solid (a three-dimensional concept).

Der Flächeninhalt ist in der Geometrie ein Maß für die Größe einer Fläche. Eine Fläche ist ein zweidimensionaler, also flacher Gegenstand (Figur/Objekt ohne Rauminhalt), der eben oder gekrümmt sein kann. Sie kann einen dreidimensionalen Körper begrenzen, aber nicht füllen. Der Flächeninhalt wird jedoch oft kurz Fläche genannt, was jedoch nach der mathematischen Terminologie falsch ist. Um den Flächeninhalt anzugeben, wird eine Reihe von Flächenmaßen verwendet. Das in Mathematik und Physik übliche Formelzeichen leitet sich vom lateinischen area (= Grundfläche) ab.
