Austria-Hungary (also known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austro-Hungarian monarchy or k.u.k. Monarchy), more formally known as the Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council and the Lands of the Holy Hungarian Crown of Saint Stephen, was a constitutional monarchic union between the crowns of the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary in Central Europe. The union was a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, under which the House of Habsburg agreed to share power with the separate Hungarian government, dividing the territory of the former Austrian Empire between them. The Austrian and the Hungarian lands became independent entities enjoying equal status. Austria-Hungary was a multinational realm and one of the world's great powers at the time. The dual monarchy existed for 51 years until it dissolved on 31 October 1918 before a military defeat on the Italian front of the First World War.

Österreich-Ungarn, auch als k. u. k. Doppelmonarchie oder Donaumonarchie bezeichnet, war ein Vielvölkerstaat in Mittel- und Südosteuropa, der nach dem Umbau des Kaisertums Österreich zu einer Doppelmonarchie auf der Grundlage des Österreichisch-Ungarischen Ausgleiches vom 8. Juni 1867 bis zum 31. Oktober 1918 (Austritt Ungarns aus der Realunion) bestand.

Imperiul austro-ungar (1867-1918), cunoscut şi ca „Monarhia Dunăreană”, a fost un stat dualist, alcătuit, pe de o parte, din Cisleithania, adică statele (regate, ducate etc.) din administrarea austriacă, aflate dincolo de râul Leitha, din partea vestică şi nordică a imperiului, şi, pe de altă parte, din Transleithania, adică statele aparţinând regatului Ungariei căruia, în prealabil, i-a fost încorporat Marele Principat al Transilvaniei. Statul dualist s-a aflat sub conducerea împăraţilor dinastiei austriece de Habsburg, totodată, regi ai Ungariei - numindu-se, din acest motiv, şi „Imperiul Cezaro-Crăiesc” sau „Dubla Monarhie” (Kaiserliche und Königliche Doppelmonarchie). Numele complet al federaţiei era „Regatele şi Ţările reprezentate în Consiliul Imperial şi Ţările Sfintei Coroane Ungare a lui Ştefan” („Die im Reichsrat vertretenen Königreiche und Länder und die Länder der heiligen ungarischen Stephanskrone”).
