Évariste Galois (25 October 1811 – 31 May 1832) was a French mathematician born in Bourg-la-Reine. While still in his teens, he was able to determine a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable by radicals, thereby solving a long-standing problem. His work laid the foundations for Galois theory and group theory, two major branches of abstract algebra, and the subfield of Galois connections. He was the first to use the word "group" as a technical term in mathematics to represent a group of permutations. A radical Republican during the monarchy of Louis Philippe in France, he died from wounds suffered in a duel under questionable circumstances at the age of twenty.

Er starb im Alter von nur 20 Jahren bei einem Duell, erlangte allerdings durch seine Arbeiten zur Lösung algebraischer Gleichungen, der so genannten Galoistheorie, posthum Anerkennung.

Évariste Galois (Bourg-la-Reine, - Paris, 31 mai 1832) est un mathématicien français. Il a entre autres laissé son nom à la théorie de Galois, qui étudie la résolubilité des équations algébriques à partir des groupes de permutations de leurs racines et qui est considérée comme un ingrédient important dans le point de vue structural des mathématiques modernes. Il a aussi contribué à l'élaboration des « corps de Galois », autre nom des corps finis, qui jouent par exemple un rôle essentiel en cryptographie. Les démêlés de Galois avec les autorités, tant scientifiques que politiques, les zones d'ombre entourant sa mort précoce, contrastant avec l'importance reconnue maintenant à ses travaux, ont contribué à en faire l'incarnation même du génie malheureux.

Évariste Galois (ur. 25 października 1811 r. w Bourg-la-Reine k. Paryża, zm. 31 maja 1832 r. w Paryżu) – francuski matematyk o bardzo dużych zasługach dla rozwoju algebry, w szczególności zagadnienia rozwiązywalności równań wielomianowych. Zginął w pojedynku w wieku 21 lat, choć istnieje też podejrzenie, że został zamordowany za sympatie republikańskie, a pojedynek jedynie upozorowano (dwa razy był więziony za publiczne wystąpienia przeciw władzy króla Ludwika Filipa). W liście napisanym ostatniej nocy przed śmiercią zawarł swoje najważniejsze idee i osiągnięcia matematyczne. Utalentowany matematyk, mimo dużych zdolności dwukrotnie nie zdał egzaminu do École Polytechnique w Paryżu.
